We are actively looking for graduate students interested in a PhD in our group. Funding can be project related or through training grants.
Periodically, we have post-doctoral positions available. To inquire, send a CV (with publication list), a research statement, any unpublished manuscripts, and three references to Chiara Sabatti.
Currently, I am looking for two postdoctoral scolars. One would be working in collaboration with the laboratory of Prof. Nelson Freimer on the development of analysis methods for linkage and association studies of complex neurobehavioral traits in very large datasets, including samples from population isolates. An other would be working on analysis of DNA sequences and expression arrays to reconstruct networks of transcription regulation.
The statistical genetics group is located in the Human Genetics department, but we are also closely connected to the Statistics department. The Human Genetics department has a number of faculty members that work on statistical and mathematical methods relevant for data of genetic origin: Lange, Sinsheimer, Cantor, Sobel, Horvath are some. This group is closely connected and collaborations are frequent. We have a training grant that supports graduate students education and periodic seminars and get togethers. A significant portion of the HG department's weekly seminars is devoted to statistical/mathematical topics. On the week prior to the seminar related articles are discussed in the departemental journal club.
Bioinformatics is also a substantial interest of the Statistics
Department, which hosts the
Center for Biodata Reduction. The weekly statistics seminars are
of interest for our group.
The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics often hosts programs that are of interest for our research program. In particular see here.
There are a number of groups at UCLA that foster research in area that are related to our interest:
UCLA-DOE Institute for genomics and proteomics
Biomath
Biostat
Computational Biology Seminar
For after work activities, UCLA has great recreational facilities, including a marina center, an outstending performing arts series, and lots of tresures in the music department, TV and movie archive, etc.
For the necessities of daily life, you may want to check the UCLA housing, UCLA transportation program, human resources, medical center.
The UCLA campus is in Westwood, at the foot of the hills and 10 miles from the ocean. Westwood is home to many movie theaters and to the Geffen playhouse. The Getty center is very nearby. As for Los Angeles, @LA, and the LA Times can give you some information.
