Stat 19: Eugenics and Statistics: Interpreting Genetic Basis of Human Traits

This is a fiat-lux seminar offered through the department of statistics. Offered in the Fall 2005. Meeting time is 2:00pm in BOELTER 7702. Identification and interpretation of genetic basis of human traits such as height, IQ, and temperament, has been source of considerable debates from beginning of such studies. And rightly so, as there are number of implications for society associated with diverse interpretations. Focus on debate that took place at beginning of the last century. Mechanism of inheritance of traits such as height was not clear; emerging field of statistics contributed to establish existence of genetic basis for them. Founding father of statistics R.A. Fisher proposed mathematical models to explain inheritance. This is ideal example to understand role of statistics in framing what can be considered as scientific truth with particular reference to genetics-and what are terms of its implication in society. Materials are available here.

Stat 19: Decoding bio-information: a new challenge for the quantitative sciences

This is a fiat-lux seminar offered through the department of statistics. Offered in the Fall 2003, it is opened to a limited number of students. Meeting time is Wednesday at 3 in the meeting room of the 5th floor of the gonda building.
We assist to a data-deluge in the life sciences - the sequencing of the human genome being one example. To interpret all this information, life scientists have turned to mathematicians and statisticians in an unprecedented way. In the past, other sciences have used quantitative analysis to a large extent: physics and economics are two - very different - examples. Is this going to happen to life sciences? What are the contributions, so far, of mathematics and statistics? How can we define the emerging field of ``Bioinformatics''?

Stat 180/236: Introduction to Bayesian Statistics

Here is the web-page of the course.

Stat 202c: Monte Carlo methods in Statistics

Here is the web-page of the course.

Stat 254: Statistical Methods for Computational Biology

This course is a core requirement for the UCLA Bioinformatics Certificate Program. It is offered in the Spring. The web-page for my lectures during the 2003 edition is available here.

Hum Gen 236b: Advanced Human Genetics

This course, part of the required load for Human genetics graduate students is organized in Spring 2003 by Prof. Rita Cantor and Eric Sobel. Here is the official web-page. I was responsible for a week of lectures in May 19-23. Materials are available here. Please check again for information on the 2004 edition.

Stat 296: Statistical Genomics Seminar Course

Partecipation in this course requires litterature reading, oral presentation, and individual research work. Consent of instructor is required for enrollment. It is generally offered on a quaterly base. The meeting time for the fall 2003 is Thursday at 3 in the meeting room (5303) of the 5th floor in the Gonda building.

Statistical Genetics

I do not currently teach an entire course in statistical genetics. But it does happen quite often that I have to organize a lecture. Here is meterial connected to some of the classes I have given so far (besides contribution to HG236b)

Gene expression arrays

I gave few short courses on the statistical methods involved in the analysis of gene expression arrays. Some of the lectures can be obtained through here: Statarray
