Statistical Genetics with Mendel 2005

This week long course will take place July 4-8, 2005, in Pavia, Italy. The host there is the department of Human Genetics and Molecular Biology.

This five full-day intensive course will cover state-of-the-art statistical genetics methods for detection of genetic loci for complex traits, either qualitative or quantitative. Each day will include hands-on computer exercises using the computer programs Mendel and SimWalk. We will cover the general theory behind the methods as well as emphasize the practical aspects needed to give the best chances of success.

Topics will include:

  • Study Design and other data issues
  • Mistyping Detection
  • Haplotyping
  • Mapping Markers
  • Analysis of Qualitative Traits including:
    • Parametric Linkage analysis
    • Non-Parametric Linkage (NPL)
    • Association Testing:
      • Family-based
      • Case/Control
  • Analysis of Quantitative Traits including:
    • Variance Component Analysis
    • Association Testing

Participants in the Course need no prior experience with these methods or programs, but should be "computer literate".

Participants will be required to bring a laptop computer to run the analysis exercises. Please see below for the minimum computer system requirements.

The Course is designed to assist people who are actively studying the genetics of complex traits. The Course will cover both theoretical and practical gene mapping issues and will stress the interpretation of results.

Applications are now closed. If you have applied, you will receive notification about your enrollment shortly. There were twice as many excellent applications as there was room for participants, which made the choice of whom to accept extremely difficult.

If you were unable to apply this year or we were forced to decline your participation due to the limited amount of spaces, please consider taking part in one of the future courses. We will advertize them regularly at UCLA Human Genetics Software Distribution.

Participants will be required to bring a laptop computer on which to run the analysis exercises. This laptop must meet the following minimum system requirements.

256 MB RAM
200 MB available storage space (i.e., free hard disk space)
CD-ROM
USB
Windows (2000 or XP) or MacOS (10.2 or later) or Linux (Red Hat 7.3 or later, or equivalent)

FEES:

The fee for each course covers all teaching material and two social dinners. Costs in detail are
  • for students from University of Pavia and UCLA Euro 852,00;
  • for other from non-profit institutions Euro 1.000,00;
  • for people from for-profit institutions 1.500,00.
Accomodation fee will be 250,00 euro maximum. Luncheon vouchers will be available at a special price; restaurants that have an arrangement with the Department will be indicated as well. Details of payment will be provided after acceptance. Applicants who cancel adhesion to the course more than 30 days before the first day of the course will receive full refund. Cancellations must be sent in writing to the course secretariat. Cancellations received later than 20 days prior to the course are subject to a 150,00 Euro service charge. For cancellations received less than 7 working days prior to the course, no refund will be available. Do not pay any fees until your application has been accepted.
Depending on the final number of participants some fellowships, partially covering the registration fee, may be available for students.
ACCOMODATION:

Accommodation can be booked via the course secretariat by filling the accommodation form, provided after acceptance. We have reserved a variety of different rooms, at low cost. Details on availability will be provided to you when you contact the course administrative support after acceptance.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL EVENTS:

There are two social dinners planned with the course: on monday and thursday nights. The afternoon of thursday will be devoted to an excursion to a local architectural gemm: the Certosa.
