Statistical Genomics

.

Sequences of entire genomes, genotypes of individual variations in thousand of polymorphic loci and hundreds of individuals, gene expression measurements via cDNA chips on thousand of genes in a variety of conditions: these are some of the types of datasets are now available to genetic researchers. And they are examples of what are the challenges coming from genetics to the information sciences. The statistical genetics laboratory use tools from information theory, Bayesian statistics, Markov chain Monte Carlo to identify in these massive datasets scientifically valuable information.

Chiara Sabatti has now moved to Stanford. Her scientific interests and her background are very much the same. Please look her up here.

Thank you Leena

On March 11, 2010, Leena Peltonen prematurely passed away. She "was clearly one of the most productive and influential geneticists in the world." She also was the (founding) chair of the department of Human Genetics when I joined UCLA in 2000. When I met her, I had a few months old baby and my husband and I were both looking for academic positions. The road to a carreer in science looked rather ardous. Leena was such a spectacular and important example of strenght, enthusiasm and determination. She incarnated for me the fact that you need to aim high to reach high. And she helped me very concretely, assuring a space in the university day care for my daughter. Her success came from hard work, but also from her ability to dream big and believe in people's potential. And it always felt good to see this self assured and commanding person wearing pink tailleur, nailpolish and lipstick.
